Family Of Man Fatally Shot By Police Reaches $3.5 Million Settlement

July 21, 2020

In Martinsburg, W. VA, the family of a man who was shot 22 times by police has reached a settlement totaling $3.5 million. Wayne Jones, a black man with schizophrenia, was stopped by police in 2013. Police stopped him for walking in the road, and ultimately killed him that day.

The case was dismissed three times, until a federal appeals judge reversed the lower court’s decision last month. This reversal was in hopes of showing a powerful message against police use of deadly force.

After the trial court dismissed the case, Christopher Brown took on the appeal, and went in to win three appeals which resulted in $3.5 million settlement for the family.
